Chapter 7

Lilith Rainsford ran as fast as her legs could carry her towards the main Cartanican Retainer office. Tucked under both arms were hastily printed reports, liability forms, police, and army reports, and last know wills and whereabouts of delegated officials and staff. It was a mess, to say the least, but as she passed by a west wing atrium towards the office, she couldn’t help but catch a glimpse of what was going on outside.

The castle within Inferno sat on top of a high hill, overseeing the rest of the city from all sides. Due to the peace the three kingdoms have maintained all these years— despite petty disputes over nothing more than politics— the location of this castle is a rather poor spot for defense. It wasn’t like Solem la Caelum, where their fortress of a castle was protected by a primordial forest only the Royal Family could understand. That being said, Cartanica used powerful magic while their sister country did not.

While she was still rushing, some papers falling from her hands, She could just barely make out the thin outline of the magical border being held up from the beach and into the connecting mountains. She was sure the border was extended to the entire perimeter of the city, but the monsters that were currently attacking were only coming from the waves.

She prayed the Royal Family was safe within their castle and the few magic users in the flower lands were keeping people safe.

Making it to her desk only a couple of minutes later, she slammed the papers over her keyboard, waking her computer up, and pulled her phone out. Fifteen missed calls from General Valdemar, two missed calls from Laurent, a wall of unread text messages that seemed to blur together until the text at the forefront caught her attention. It was sent not a couple of minutes ago.

“Getting out of Solem la Caelum was granted teleport by the Royal Family that’s how serious this is.”

Lilith was holding her breath since she unpocketed her phone, but the exhale she let out almost scared her. Any longer and she might have passed out. Dropping her hand, she looked around the room to the other Retainers typing away at their keyboards or screaming into their phones. She locked eyes with one male Retainer, a newbie wearing his first year in training badge, and pointed forcibly towards him. They were all on edge, but she felt a little bad for the way he jumped when she singled him out.

“You, do you know anything about the border rotation for Inferno? Is there any way out of
